"As occupational therapists, we understand that it's not enough to give a patient something to do with their hands. We must reach for the heart as well as the hands. It's the heart that does the healing." - Ora Ruggles
I read this quote in my first year of graduate school and drew the picture below as a reminder of this profound truth. Occupational therapy isn't just about physical tasks or exercises; it's about empowering individuals to reclaim their lives and find purpose and fulfillment despite challenges.
By fostering a therapeutic relationship and understanding patients' emotional and psychological needs, occupational therapists aid in their physical recovery and promote their mental well-being. I believe this approach is what sets occupational therapy apart and makes a lasting impact on patients' lives.
My desire is to continue striving for excellence in my practice and recognizing the profound healing power that lies within the heart of occupational therapy.
